G&M: MPs Join Forces To Order Release Of Afghan Records
After the stunning revelations by Canada's top General that there was indeed evidence that an Afghan detainee under Canadian custody who was then turned over to Afghan security forces was tortured, Canadian opposition MP's are using an extremely rare motion to attempt to force the government to release thousands of underacted documents concerning Afghan detainees.
The motion was put forward late yesterday and passed the House of Commons by a measure of 145-143. However, the government can, and probably will ignore the motion, which means that the courts could get involved in a determination between national security laws and Parliamentary privilege.
