Government Opposition Responds To Detainee Abuse Evidence

Following General Natynzcyk's revelation that an Afghan detainee that was in Canadian custody in 2006 was abused after being handed over to Afghan security forces.  Prior to this the government's official stance on the issue was to deny that any reports were sent to officials detailing any concerns over abuse.

Three weeks ago, Canadian Diplomat Richard Colvin was called to testify before a commission on detainee abuse allegations and he said that he had personally sent reports to government officials urging action over concerns that abuse and torture was occurring.  Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter MacKay was forced to admit that he was aware of one report from Mr. Colvin, but that the diplomat's credibility was an issue.  However, today it seems that General Natynzcyk's comments support Mr. Colvin's version of events and now squarely put the onus on the government to explain flip-flopping on receiving reports and knowledge of detainee abuse.

Opposition leaders rejoined their call for a public inquiry into this matter and called for the resignation of now Minister of Defence Peter MacKay.

Watch clip of some of the responses to this situation by Liberal and NDP Ministers below:
