Government Overturns CRTC On New Mobile Phone Company

In what may be good news for your average consumer, the Federal Government has overturned a CRTC ruling that the company Globalive Wireless Management Corp., is not a Canadian owned company.  Industry Minister Tony Clement found that the company meets Canada's Telecommunications Act rules, noting that section 12 of the Act gives the Government the power to vary a CRTC decision on its own motion.

The ruling is effective immediately, so the company can enter the Canadian marketplace right way.  Minister Clement said, "Our goal has always been greater competition in the telecommunications industry, which leads to lower prices, better service and more choice for consumers and business."

Currently the telecommunications market is dominated by 3 companies, Rogers, Telus, and Bell who together hold a 95% market share.  Consumers have been complaining for years that they pay extremely high prices for mobile phone services compared to other countries around the world so perhaps this is a sign of falling prices in the future.
