Tories Skip Committee Meeting
A scheduled meeting on the Afghan detainee transfer scandal was boycotted by Conservative MPs last night, fueling speculation that the government plans on proroguing Parliament yet again, in what appears to be an attempt to shut down any further probes into the matter. To prorogue Parliament is an archaic tool used to literally shut down Parliament so that nothing can get done.
Opposition MPs attended a scheduled committee meeting to determine who will be called to testify on the ongoing scandal slowly engulfing the governing Conservative party. However, for the meeting to go forward the rules demanded that there be at least 7 MPs in attendance, but because none of the Conservative MP's showed up the meeting could not go forward. Opposition members invited members of the press into the room to show the empty government chairs accusing the government of stonewalling the issue.
Considering that the next Parliamentary sesion begins at the end of January, it appears as if the Prime Minister wants time to end his political woes as the issue has begun to cut into Conservative poll numbers. Also, if the rumours are true that Stephen Harper may prorogue Parliament until after the winter Olympics, time will tell if the strategy works and everyone forgets the issue when Parliament returns months from now.
