VIDEO UPDATE:Obama Makes Final Health Reform Push, For Real This Time
Appearing in Fairfax, Virginia at George Mason University, the President held his final rally for health reform in advance of a vote in the House on Sunday. Leadership in the House decided today that they would be going ahead and using a procedure called "deem and pass," allowing the House to vote simultaneously on the Senate bill, and the "fix" to the Senate bill, at the same time.
It should be noted that "deem and pass" has been used hundreds of times by both parties since the 1930's, although never for such a large piece of legislation. Republicans have been focusing on the messy procedures used to get the bill passed as a way to generate opposition, but it appears that the momentum has switched and the wind is at the backs of Democrats as they are within one or two votes of the 216 needed for the bill to pass the House. If the bill does pass the House on Sunday, or Monday, focus will immediately shift to the Senate and their vote next week on the reconciliation bill. If it passes the Senate late next week, it will then head to the President to sign into law and a long 14 month debate will be over for at least another decade.
President Obama was particularly fired up today, and the crowd was really into the speech and his agenda on health reform. Following a similar pattern from his other recent speeches on health-care he used a list of three of the most popular items in the legislation like an end to pre-existing conditions, the bill is paid for with a huge deficit reduction while covering 32 million more people, and finally that the bill will reduce costs for the consumer through lowered premiums and tax credits.
